Prince Georges County Final Webisdoe...Our Nations Cut Back in Fire Services

Tulefog's picture

Tulefog — Fri, 05/08/2009 - 00:00

Battalion Viewers,

Our Nations Security and the Safety of all of us are at stake with the budget-cuts in the fire service across our Nation.

This is without question...

This Fridays Webisode with Prince Georges County may possibly be the last webisode with this talented and well trained department for 2009.

This week, you will ride-along with Engine 29 for the first time.

This webisode will show cut-backs in Prince Georges County. Their are not enough paid members due to budget-cuts. This night you will see one paid member and only one volunteer on the engine. I was the only person in the back of the apparatus.

The cut-backs in fire services is becoming a dangerous situation across our nation and most civilians do not know what is happening...

Many cities have had to cut-back from five firefighters on an Engine or Truck to four...some are being pushed to think about going to three...

My View...my scenario:

Can you imagine an Engine company of four arriving on scene on a busy night in your city...

..One is on the pipe, “the nozzle on the end of the hose” one is running the pumps on the engine; only two first responders to save lives...four victims are down in the fire of this home...who does not get saved?

This did not happen on this incident and I have never seen it happen; but I believe it can...

I know our country is out of funds and I know we are all having a hard time in this economy, but, if any of our law makers come to the plate where they are asking us to pay more taxes...we have to say YES!

You will be hearing me repeat this message until CLOSED fire houses have been RE-OPENED and the numbers of first responders across the nation have been RE-INSTATED NATION WIDE. No more Brown-Outs...!

Be safe.

Sincerely,

DRF

David, This is a growing

jbwonfire — Fri, 05/08/2009 - 10:11

David,

This is a growing problem. In Mississippi, we are experiencing cut backs in several departments. Our dept only runs three guys to an engine or ladder because thats all they would ever let us have so when you learn the job here you hit the ground running. Unfortunatley that means we can't afford any cut backs and are praying that it doesn't happen. I can't imagine the type of firefighting being done in some of the depts you have covered in your webisodes being faught with less personel. We will continue to pray for all of our brothers and sisters in the fire service here, not just for this crisis but for their every day actions.

God Bless,

David the new webisode is not

pipeman145 — Sat, 05/09/2009 - 08:29

David the new webisode is not showing. I myself have actually fought a house fire by myself, running the pump with the help of a police officer hooking me up to the hydrant and fighting the fire until more help arrived. This was a common thing during the day time at my old fire company. This is common through out the country with volunteer fire companies unfortunately.

Tulefog — Fri, 05/22/2009 - 12:25

Hi Andy,

I am soryy it takes me so long to respond, but you know how busy I am.

The Webisode seems to be working fine, have you checked it lately.

I am trying to do my best to let the public know what's going on...they need to know.

Be safe.

Sincerely,

David

In my old department we had

nayr1010 — Sat, 05/09/2009 - 19:56

In my old department we had to have a special daytime response because of a shortage of people. From 5am to 5pm everyday an aditional rescue/pumper would go to all calls in our district

If we had a staffed fire

bonte34 — Wed, 05/13/2009 - 08:19

If we had a staffed fire house we would be greatful. Right now we have 2 people on for our ambulance 8hrs/weekdays. We are expected to run both fire and ems calls.

At least in our township, non of our residents come out to out township meetings, so the board members do what they think. If more residents come out and expressed how they feel, maybe things would change. I dont know if that is true elsewere or not, but if the public knew that there fire service is getting cut, they might have something to say.

But I will say this. With all the fire departments having to cut staff, the first time one of the board/council members needed the fire department, and they either coulnd't respond or were short staffed, they would be outraged, and demand answers. I dont think they would like the answer. If you didn't cut staffing we would have been able to save your house.
